WANTED: RAISE CRAZE COORDINATOR

Here is a great chance to get involved with the PTO in a fundraiser that is unlike any other. Raise Craze empowers our children and puts them in charge of their own success. The program provides an online platform that enables students to set up secure, custom websites where they request donations via email (from friends and family, near and far). During the fundraiser, students pay it forward by completing Acts of Kindness for others. They spend time serving, not selling. Regardless of ability to raise money, this inclusive approach allows everyone to participate because EVERYONE CAN SPREAD KINDNESS! They are sponsored for their acts of service and give back while they earn.

We have lots of exciting ideas for Raise Craze and are looking for a volunteer to run this program this spring. Lots of tools and support will be available! Reach out to pto@liljapto.org if you’re interested.

Lilja Parent Kristen Pope Runs for Select Board

Kristen Pope with her daughter, Lily, a Lilja Lion Kindergartener!

Hi Lilja Parents! My name is Kristen L. Pope and I would be humbled to represent you on Natick’s Select Board. It’s important to have the representation of a mother on our Select Board. My husband Richard and I chose to move to Natick almost six years ago. At the time, I was eight months pregnant with our daughter Lily. The commuter rail, good schools, affordability, a cool downtown and diversity were all the elements we needed to make Natick home.

Not long after moving to Natick, my husband and I both got involved in serving our town on boards. I’ve had the privilege of serving on Natick’s Personnel Board. I’ve also served as an advisor to a youth-led coalition called Rise Natick focused on anti-racist principles and I currently serve on the United Way-Tri County board.

Throughout my adult life, servant leadership and collaboration with teams and board members is a principle I’ve followed and modeled. Natick is facing complex challenges and as a select board member, I will prioritize listening, collecting facts and data, collaborating with the other select board members and coming to sound and sustainable decisions that benefit everyone.

My platform has six interconnected positions: Representation, Town Governance,  Smart Economic Growth, Affordable Housing, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Budget. Read more at my website: www.kristenfornatick.org

LILJA RANCH SUPPORTS TWO MAJOR PROJECTS

Thanks again to everyone for making Lilja Ranch a huge success! We are thrilled to share that with the success of the event we are able to help put funding towards two major projects!

We have been working with staff and DPW to turn the under utilized inner courtyard into a beautiful garden space that can be enjoyed by the entire Lilja community. Teachers have in mind using this space for social-emotional-learning, meditation, and community building.

Sepi Golestani, Lilja's art teacher, along with artist Joshua Winer, presented their vision of a large mosaic mural to adorn the front of Lilja Elementary School near the bus loop. Along with grant funding, we are excited to be able to use a portion of our Lilja Ranch profits towards this project. Sepi and Joshua will work with the entire Lilja student population to create a beautiful mosaic that will be a permanent feature at Lilja school.

ELEMENTARY ENRICHMENT

LILJA RANCH IS COMING!

Wait, did you know we were having an auction and theme party this weekend? ;)

We are in the final days before our auction catalog goes live – we are so excited to release our fabulous list of over 175 items in more than 10 categories. There is truly something for everyone, adults and kids alike! Take a family trip, make some ice cream, pamper yourself at the spa, get your car cleaned, go see a show, figure out what the heck to do for your next kid’s birthday party, and more and more and more. It’s all there!

And at Lilja Ranch, hug your child’s teacher (many of them are going!), see friends, play games, win scratch tickets, ride the bull, dance around, and eat awesome food. This is your official invitation to participate in the best event the PTO has hosted in a long time – we are excited!

So, register to bid, buy tickets, and get any remaining questions answered at: www.ourschool.auction/liljaranch

As a reminder, the auction is online and a separate event from Lilja Ranch, which is the theme party being held on Saturday night at Brae Burn. You can participate in both, or the auction without the party, or the party without the auction. We are grateful for whatever type of support you can give. Thank you!

LILJA AUCTION - NEXT WEEKEND!

Yes, we are STILL talking about the auction and the Lilja Ranch party! As a reminder, tickets for Lilja Ranch (1/28/23, 7-11 pm, at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton) are on sale through this Friday, January 20, for the early bird price of $55. Head to our website to get yours ASAP! www.ourschool.auction/liljaranch

Also on our site are more details about both events if you still have questions.

So how about some NEW information? This stuff is important y’all. We’ve had a lot of questions about 1) ticket prices and 2) what the proceeds are going to be used for. To be completely transparent:

  1. We do not make money on the Lilja Ranch event itself. After Brae Burn’s cost per person, as well as the Auctria and Stripe fees, there is about $5 remaining per ticket that belongs to the PTO. That $5 helps to cover the cost of the Auctria platform ($750), DJ ($1,500), mechanical bull ($1,000), and all the other expenses that go towards execution. Even if we sell 200 tickets, we will not come close to breaking even. So why host it? The most successful fundraisers come from getting people excited about an event! And bringing a community together for a common cause. The auction committee is completely dedicated to making this an over the top, exciting experience. The ticket price does reflect the incredible food and entertainment we will have there. We hope this helps you consider buying a ticket (and inviting your friends!) if you haven’t already.

TL/DR (too long/didn’t read): Lilja Ranch is not about the money :)

2. The PTO has spent more than $30,000 this year on the new picnic tables, Cultural Arts, literacy materials, classroom support, teacher appreciation, field trips and the list goes on. We have brought in $4,000, so there is a considerable gap to make up. But, we have some very exciting ideas in the works about how to utilize the auction proceeds. We would like to support two major things: A) transforming the courtyard into a zen garden space that could be utilized by teachers for SEL/meditation/community building. The space could really have a greater purpose. B) A huge wall mural by Joshua Winer, which will be collaborative with Sepi Golestani AND all the students, and is planned for the exterior gym wall. Those two things alone are more than $25k – we are working with NPS Facilities and researching grant funding to assist, but these would be the big, visible improvements. We’re also planning to fund teacher mini grants ($10k) and some new additions to the playground and recess equipment.

TL/DR: We’ve spent far more than we’ve made this year, but still have great projects we are looking forward to supporting.

And you can support us. We have over 150 items that are going live next week! Our WISH LIST contains items that we still need to complete everything on our bid sheets. Thank you!

One last hurrah…

LILJA AUCTION - TICKET SALES OPENING SOON!

The 2023 Lilja Auction is upon us - please save the date for the evening of Saturday, January 28th, and be on the lookout for an email later this week with more details on ticket sales and what to expect at this fun night out!

MLK JR. DAY CELEBRATION + SNACKS FOR STUDENTS DRIVE

SPARK will be once again holding an MLK Jr. Celebration and Community Connection Event at Kennedy Middle School on Monday, January 16th at 10:00 am.

There is a district-wide need for snacks for students who don’t have a snack available to them. As a helpful service project for MLK Jr. Day, a “Snacks for Students” drive will run at each school.

SPARK will be collecting peanut-free individually packaged snacks (dried fruit, pretzels, chips, goldfish), cereal bars, healthy granola bars, apple sauce (single serving), fruit cups (single serving), and juice boxes. We will have a collection box in the front lobby during the week of January 9th - 13th.

SUMMER CAMP FAIR

Thursday, January 19th, 7 - 8:30PM

Come in from the cold and dream of summer fun in the sun at the 11th Annual Summer Camp Information Night at Brown School hosted by the Brown PTO - all schools are welcome! The information night is free and open to the public. Dozens of local summer camps and programs will have representatives available to answer questions, and share information about summer and year round programming.

There will be a silent auction in the library with the chance to win camp weeks, special programs, and other prizes.

Representatives from many programs will be in attendance, including School of Rock Natick, LINX, Danforth Art, Natick Parks and Recreation (Woodtrail), Mayflower Council Boy Scouts of America, Metrowest YMCA, NEOC - New England Outdoor Camp, and more.

AMAZON SMILE

Did you know that every purchase you make on Amazon could be earning money for Lilja PTO? Simply shop via AmazonSmile instead of the regular Amazon site, select Lilja PTO as your charity and the rest is automatic! The PTO has earned nearly $400 this year alone! You can also set up AmazonSmile as your default when shopping on a mobile device and can even encourage friends and family to support Lilja by signing up as well! Read the full instructions here.

Information on other Lilja partner programs is available here, including Minted, Shutterfly, and Mabel’s Labels.

Interim Principal Feedback Survey

Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey emailed by Anna Nolin:

School and District Educational Leader/Administrative hiring season is upon us and as I contemplate the installation of your permanent principal, I'd like to see how the interim one is doing.  Please consider filling out this super-short survey to give me feedback on Dr. Shelby Marscher and her work in her interim role this year.  Dr. Marscher has also served as the assistant to the past three principals, so you may also have feedback about her work in that time period as well.  Please share anything you think will help determine how we proceed with Lilja's next leader.  Responses are anonymous and feedback will be summarized to Dr. Marscher and inform our next steps.  I value your feedback!

Thank you for taking a few moments to answer.  Only 4 questions are required and one of them is a rating scale. This survey will be open through the rest of December.

BOOK FAIR - THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who attended the book fair last week. Sales totaled $11,521, just shy of our $12,000 target! The PTO keeps only a percentage of those sales and we used $2,331 of it to finish purchasing all wish bin books requested by Lilja teachers and staff that were not already purchased by families at the fair. The rest, after our expenses, amounts to $1,560 and will be put towards the mini grants budget to be awarded in the spring. Thank you again!

Congratulations to our coloring page winners from each grade, who won a specially selected book from the fair and a Lilja sweatshirt!
