PTA Upcoming Events
We will have our last meeting of the year on Wednesday, June 10th at 9:15AM in the cafeteria. Anyone with younger children is welcome to bring them as we will not be able to provide babysitting during the school day.
We will review the budget for next year as well as discuss open board positions and plans for next year. We need to have a full board to move the PTA forward next year. Next year will be an auction year and in order to be able to run all of our annual events and an auction is it critical for new people to step up. If you are unable to attend the meeting but have questions about joining the board please contact Christine Kingdon.
If you have not sent in your pledge donations please get those in this week. All HFW tests have been given and pledge sheets have be returned to you. Please return your donations in the manilla envelope the pledge sheets were sent home in, with the letters HFW written on the front ASAP. Please make all checks payable to the Lilja PTA. Once all the donations are collected we will make our donation to Dog B.O.N.E.S.
METCO Information for incoming 5th Grade Families
Families in Boston and Natick have the opportunity to work together to build family friends relationships, where the spirit is one of cooperating and sharing rather than of guest and host. By volunteering to be a METCO Family Friend, the Natick family helps to communicate information regarding school programs and schedules and is a familiar contact at school meetings and social events during the transition to a new community for a Boston family. Boston families not only provide the Natick family with a new link to the city, but also offer a diverse set of cultural and life experiences to share.
Relationships between families usually develop slowly, and the type and intensity of them varies from family to family. Some families plan joint outings, have students sleep over regularly in Boston and Natick, or get involved in sports teams or activities together. Other METCO Family Friends simply serve as an emergency contact and see each other occasionally at school or METCO sponsored events. It is particularly important that students from both communities understand that as cooperating partners they will be taking on an obligation of friendliness and helpfulness, but not of mandated friendship. Hopefully, friendship develops and cultural sensitivity is heightened, but each relationship will be unique.

Connect Africa Backpack & Supplies Drive
Lilja Elementary will be running a backpack and school supplies drive from June 15-22nd for the Connect-Africa Foundation. Connect-Africa aims to strengthen impoverished families in Uganda by providing educational sponsorship and micro loans. We aid orphans and vulnerable children and their caregivers. In Uganda orphans are ...taken in by extended family, taxing the family’s already meager resources. The guardians (generally elderly grandmothers; “Jajas”), are subsistence farmers often caring for numerous grandchildren making education, which is not free, out of reach for these families. We provide tuition and school supplies, uniforms and shoes, healthcare and personal hygiene supplies, tutoring and mentoring - for a child’s entire school career including university. We are looking for gently used backpacks, pens (not pencils), rulers, pocket dictionaries, scientific calculators, flip flops, and used, but working laptops. If your child is no longer in need of these items or has extras, please encourage them to deposit supplies in the collection bin that will be located in the front entrance. Items collected will be carried to Uganda by Connect Africa Director Lynn S. Auerbach. Thank you in advance for considering to donate; if you would like to learn more about this amazing foundation or find out how else you can get more involved, please visit us at http://connect-africa.org/
With Kind Regards, Nicole Chan (Lilja Lion Kindergarten Parent)
