A Big Thank You to everyone who supported the Lilja Fair!

PTA Upcoming Events

Lilja Fair
Thank you to all the families that did not let the rain get in the way of the fair. We had a great turnout and with a few tweaks we were able to make it work inside the building. We had so many wonderful volunteers help out from setup to clean up and everything in between. We are very grateful for the time and heavy lifting that many of our volunteers did to make the fair successful. Our fourth grade students and Lilja Alumni were a big help in filling in where needed, the extra help was great.
We had some very creative cakes for the cake walk and as always we had a sell out before the fair was over! Thank you to Mercedes Lagan for organizing the cakewalk for her last year at Lilja. The bake sale had just a few items left at the end of the day, and there were many satisfied customers leaving with delicious baked treats. The face painting was busy as always from the minute the fair starts to the very end. Thank you to Lydia Grehn for organizing a talented team again this year for her last year at Lilja.
Thank you to the brave people that ventured into the dunk tank, we only wish the weather would have let us use it longer!  A special thank you to Elise Malloy who took a turn in the tank.
We can’t forget Ben & Jerry’s and Pizza Plus for providing some additional treats at the fair this year.
It definitely takes a village to put on a large event like the fair and we are very thankful for all of the people that took the time to help out. Thank you to Mr. Tim and his staff for all of their help and flexibility with moving things around. A huge thank you to Colleen O’Leary for taking on the fair as my co-chair this year.  It was a pleasure working with her on this annual Lilja tradition.

PTA Meeting
We will have our last meeting of the year on Wednesday, June 10th at 9:15AM in the cafeteria. Anyone with younger children is welcome to bring them as we will not be able to provide babysitting during the school day. We will review the budget for next year as well as discuss open board positions and plans for next year. We need to have a full board to move the PTA forward next year. Next year will be an auction year and in order to be able to run all of our annual events and an auction is it critical for new people to step up.  If you are unable to attend the meeting but have questions about the board please contact Christine Kingdon.

Outside Events:

Connect Africa Backpack & Supplies Drive
Lilja Elementary will be running a backpack and school supplies drive from June 15-22nd for the Connect-Africa Foundation.  Connect-Africa aims to strengthen impoverished families in Uganda by providing educational sponsorship and micro loans.  We aid orphans and vulnerable children and their caregivers. In Uganda orphans are taken in by extended family, taxing the family’s already meager resources. The guardians (generally elderly grandmothers; “Jajas”), are subsistence farmers often caring for numerous grandchildren making education, which is not free, out of reach for these families.  We provide tuition and school supplies, uniforms and shoes, healthcare and personal hygiene supplies, tutoring and mentoring - for a child’s entire school career including university.  We are looking for gently used backpacks, pens (not pencils), rulers, pocket dictionaries, scientific calculators, flip flops, and used, but working laptops.  If your child is no longer in need of these items or has extras, please encourage them to deposit supplies in the collection bin that will be located in the front entrance.   Items collected will be carried to Uganda by Connect Africa Director Lynn S. Auerbach.  Thank you in advance for considering to donate; if you would like to learn more about this amazing foundation or find out how else you can get more involved, please visit us at http://connect-africa.org/
With Kind Regards, Nicole Chan (Lilja Lion Kindergarten Parent)

Please do not hesitate to contact a member of the board with any questions.
